The Gold Experience 21st Anniversary

Posted by Shaliah on September 26, 2016 at 6:00 PM Comments comments (0)
The Purple Rain album of the 90s has turned legal! I'm talking about the album "The Gold Experience". This album, in my opinion, is one of the best records that Prince ever made. This album highlights the diversity of his music which includes funk, rock, r&b, rap, and soul. Various critics applauded this album as well. Some calling it Prince's best record in years. Others stated that the music was outrageously and originally as anything he's ever recorded. Others said it was his best record since "Sign O the Times". Nevertheless, the greatness of this album was overshadowed by his feud with Warner Bros. over owning the master recordings of his music. It is now out of print and very rare to find. (If you do, I'm sure the price will be outrageous). Below is what I believe to be the best tracks on the album from my favorite to least favorite. 12. We March A nice song on which Prince discusses racism. Although this is a great song, it's my least favorite on the album. 11. 319 A funky rock song! 10. Now Another funky rap song by Prince. The song is nice and has great screams in it as well. 9. Dolphin A more poppier rock song by Prince but it's still great! 8. Shh A great slow jam. Prince wrote and produced this song for Tevin Campbell on his album "I'm Ready", but he recorded for himself. Safe to say I like this version better! 7. Billy Jack Bi**h A great funk song dedicated to columnist CJ from the Minneapolis Star Tribune. It brings up the question of what if's in relations to CJ gossiping about Prince and calling him names. Prince told CJ that the song wasn't about her, but Prince's bandmate who was there when he wrote the song said it was. Regardless, it's a great track! 6. P Control This song is a perfect blend of rap and funk music. It is one of Prince's best dance tunes. I think it was a great opener for the album. It focuses on self-respect for women but has a funny way of showing it. Listen to the track and you'll see what I mean. 5. I Hate U One of my favorite r&b tracks by Prince with an amazing guitar solo at the end. Prince tells of a girl that he hates because he loves her so much. He even takes the woman to court. It also has very humorous dialogue in it too. 4. The Most Beautiful Girl in the World Probably the only commercially successful song from the album and one of Prince's most well-known songs. This is a beautiful r&b ballad written for Prince's then wife Mayte. 3. Endorphinmachine This song is my other favorite rock song by Prince (My other favorite is Computer Blue). The guitar riffs on the song is incredible. It's one of those songs that make you happy when you hear it! 2. Shy This may shock some, but it's just something about this song that I absolutely love. The acoustic guitar riffs and storytelling makes this song is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell and Sly and the Family Stone. 1. Gold No better way to end an album than with Gold. It's a lighter anthem which is similar to that of Purple Rain. Prince touted the single as the next Purple Rain. It's one of those moving, inspirational songs.

Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 27th Anniversary

Today is the 27th anniversary of the Greatest Female Performer's Rhythm Nation 1814 album. Rhythm Nation 1814 was a concept album that addressed social issues such as racism, drug abuse, tragedies, and poverty. It was ranked #277 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2012. In my opinion, this album is ranked with the other top concept message albums: Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, Stevie Wonder's Innervisions, and Prince's Sign O' the Times. Below I have ranked her songs from the album with #1 being the best in my opinion. Just know that EVERY song on this album is good, but I just prefer some songs over. Here is my list: 12. Lonely 11. Love Will Never Do (Without You) 10. Black Cat 9. Livin' in a World (They Didn't Make) 8. Come Back to Me 7. Escapade 6. Alright 5. Someday Is Tonight 4. Miss You Much 3. State of the World 2. The Knowledge 1. Rhythm Nation

NBC's The Wiz Live!

Posted by Shaliah on December 4, 2015 at 1:40 PM Comments comments (0)

Ever since it was announced that NBC was doing a live verison of the hit legendary and iconic musical "The Wiz", there has been a lot of controversy. People have wondered would it be better than the first with Stepahinie Mills or would it live up to the movie "The Wiz starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. In my opinion, NBC's 'The Wiz Live" was fantastic! Before we compare and contrast, let's take a look at the original.

"The Wiz" was first introduced when it was a broadway production beginning January 5, 1975 at The Majestic Theatre. It starred Stephanie Mills as Dorothy, Hinton Battle as Scarecrow, Tiger Haynes as Tin Man, and Ted Ross as Lion. It proved to be an instant success and a blockbuster hit! To this day, Stephanie Mill's performance is still praised by many critics today.

In 1977, Motown Productions acquired film rights to The Wiz. It starred Diana Ross as Dorothy, Michael Jackson as Scarecrow, Ted Ross as Cowardly Lion, and Nipsey Russell as Tinman. The movie also featured special guests such as Lena Horne, Richard Pryor, and Mabel King. Stephanie Mills was originally cast as Doorthy, but Diana Ross wanted the role badly. There was controversy surrounding Diana Ross being cast as Dorothy because she was much older than Dorothy origanally was (She was 33 years old at the time). Nevertheless, her performance was excellent The film grossed over $21 million dollars, but was considered a box office fail due to it's $24 million dollar budget. At the time, it was the most expensive film musical made. The Wiz would go on to become a cult classic.

NBC's "The Wiz Live! " garnered over than 11 million viewers which was more than NBC's "Peter Pan Live!" (which had 9.21 million viewers).  Nielsen also reported that the special produced the most social network interactions of any live television event in the past four years; there were three times as many Twitter postings related to "The Wiz Live!" Everyone's performance was amazing. Shanice Williams did an excellent job as Dorothy, and David Alan Grier did a phenomenal job as the Cowardly Lion. Although their performances were both, exceptional, my favorite performers had to be Neyo as Tinman and Elijah Kelley as the Scarecrow. It also featured many other celebrities such as Queen Laitfah as The Wiz, Mary J. Blige as Evilene the Wicked With of the West, Amber Riley as the Good Witch of the South, and Stephanie Mills as Aunt Em. I recommend this film to everybody. It is such a fun and entertaining film to watch with the whole family, especially for the holidays. The soundtrack for The Wiz Live is in stores today. If you missed this live event, check it out on December 19th on NBC for another special replay!

Happy Birthday Missy Elliott!

Today is Missy Elliott's 44th birthday. She's wrote and produced for most of your favorite artists with her longtime friend and musical partner Timbaland. They were first put on the map when they worked with Aaliyah on her classic sophmore album "One In A Million".   Ever since then they've worked with everyone from Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Monica, and Ciara. A part from writing hits for other artists, Missy has a lot of her own. She has multi-platinum albums and well-known hit singles such "Work It", "Get Ur Freak On", "Lose Control", and "The Rain". Not only is she legendary for her creative and innovative music style, but her music videos are also innovative and distinct.

With all that being said, Happy Birthday to Missy Elliott and celebrate it by "Getting Ur Freak On" (Lol). No really celebrate it by listening to her music and watching her videos.

Jet Set Radio 15th Anniversary

Posted by Shaliah on June 29, 2015 at 8:30 PM Comments comments (0)

Do you like video games? I love them. Today is the 15th anniversary of the prequel of my favorite video game of all time: Jet Set Radio aka Jet Grind Radio. It's about a group of skating teens who do graffitti. They battle out with other gangs to claim the title as the best. While they're battling with the gangs, they're also battling with the cops who want to take them down. The plot may sound a little cliche or not to exciting, but trust me, it is. The things that stands out about the game is the music. The music for the game is produced my multiple artists such as Hideki Naganuma, Guitar Vader, and B.B. Rights. Even though I never actually played this version of the game, I'm sure it's dope because of the sequel "Jet Set Radio Future", which is my favorite video game of al time (It's a big part of my childhood). The characters are the same as they are in the prequel, but they're more 3D and realistic. I plan on getting the game very soon. I'm sure it's a good as the sequel. Check out some of the footage from the video game and see if it's something you may be interested in." target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://

The Queen Is Back!

Posted by Shaliah on June 29, 2015 at 6:30 PM Comments comments (0)

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love Janet Jackson. She is on my list of top five favorite artists of all time along with Stevie Wonder, Prince, Aaliyah, and Diana Ross. She just released her new single "No Sleeep" and is excellent.  It sounds like a mix of of Anytime, Anyplace, That's The Way Love Goes, and I Get Lonely. It almost sounds like an outtake from "The Velvet Rope" album which is among one of my favorites of hers You may have seen the Janet Tribute on the BET Awards. It was great to see artists paying homage to the Queen herself. She was also awarded The Ultimate Icon Award which is well deserved. For some of you who don't know, she received the first ever MTV Icon Award in 2001 and even had a whole tribute show dedicated to her. So many people were in attendance including Usher, Aaliyah, P. Diddy, Destiny's Child, Britney Spears, and so many more where they talked about her and sang and perform a few of her songs. Also, her family was in attendance and she had a special video appearance from her brother Michael Jackson congratulating her on all her success. (Here's a clip of her performance on the special. You can also view the other performances)." target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http:// Her new world tour "The Unbreakable World Tour" is coming and I'm going. Hopefully, I will be able to get the press credentials and interview her (Pray for me on that please). Either way I'll have a great time. Make sure you continue to support her, and I hope you get her tickets to the show. If you don't know much about her, you better ask somebody! Or research her for yourself beginning with the "Control Era". She's the best female performer of all time in my opinion. Until next time, be blessed.

With Love,

Shaliah :D
